Generate a unicorn startup idea 🦄

Use ChatGPT to help brainstorm your next business idea

No ideas? Let’s ask ChatGPT 🤖 (Giphy)

Hey hackers! 😎

Today we’re going to show you how to use ChatGPT to come up with your next unicorn startup idea.

The concepts we go through can also be used when looking for ideas for a new product, sales pitches, features, etc.

Let’s get started.

Step 1 - List your wants and don't wants 📝

To start, figure out what is most important for your potential business idea. You’ll need to include these in your prompt. For our example, here's a list I put together:

  • Focus on B2B startups

  • Solve business problems using software, not hardware

  • Incorporate AI (so on trend 🔥)

  • Go for a subscription-based business model (I like recurring revenue 💰)

When creating this list, the more details you include, the better. If you're unsure about including something, try it and see where it takes you. Think about these aspects:

  • What problem do you want to solve

  • Target market or industry (e.g., healthcare, finance, education)

  • Geographical focus or limitations (e.g., local, regional, or global market)

  • Scalability and growth potential (e.g., targeting a niche market or aiming for mass adoption)

  • Amount of initial investment or funding required

  • Preferred company culture and team composition (e.g., remote work, size of the team, core values)

  • Specific technologies or tools you're interested in working with (e.g., blockchain, IoT, mobile apps)

  • Timeframe for launching the startup or achieving certain milestones

  • Potential revenue models (e.g., subscription, freemium, one-time payment)

  • Desired level of commitment and involvement (e.g., full-time, part-time, or side project)

  • Ethical considerations or social impact goals (e.g., environmental sustainability, promoting diversity and inclusion)

Once your list is ready, move on to the next step.

Step 2 - Craft the perfect prompt ✍️

Write your prompt based on the list of “wants.”

Here's an example based on the list I put together.

Prompt

Brainstorm B2B startup ideas that focus on solving business problems using software, not hardware. The startup should have an AI component and rely on a subscription-based business model for generating recurring revenue.

Result

Not bad. But let’s go further.

Step 3 - Refine the ideas💡

If you’re not happy with the results, ask ChatGPT for more ideas. You can give feedback on what you like or don’t like, so the next round is better. Keep going until you find ideas that resonate with you. Here are example prompts you can use:

  • "Provide more ideas similar to AI-powered contract analysis."

  • "Brainstorm more ideas around #3 AI-driven talent acquisition"

  • “What information can I give you to give me better ideas?”

Keep iterating until you’ve got some ideas you can build on.

Step 4 - Validate your ideas ✅

ChatGPT can’t replace the market research you’ll need to do before jumping into a new startup venture. But you can use it to get some insights into the idea before spending too much time on it. Here are some example prompts you can use:

  • “Tell me more about the AI-powered contract analysis idea”

  • “What type of company would use this software?”

  • “Would companies pay for this software?”

  • “Are there any incumbents in this space?”

  • “Are you aware of any startups working on this already?”

  • “How would a startup differentiate in the space today?”

  • “What unique value does this offer compared to existing solutions?”

🚧 Things to consider

Some important points to keep in mind while brainstorming startup ideas with ChatGPT:

  1. 📚 Limited knowledge: ChatGPT's knowledge is based on data up to 2021. Always verify and update the information it gives with your own research.

  2. 🕵️‍♂️ Not a substitute for market research: While ChatGPT gives valuable insights, it can't replace thorough market research. Add its suggestions with your own research to make informed decisions.

  3. 🚩 Bias and limitations: ChatGPT may have inherent biases and limitations. Be mindful of them and critically evaluate the ideas it generates.

  4. ✍️ Iterate and refine: Don't be afraid to go through multiple iterations with ChatGPT to get the most valuable ideas. Each time you refine your prompt, you’ll get better results.

  5. 💡 Test assumptions: Validate the assumptions and predictions that ChatGPT gives you. Remember, it's a tool and not an oracle.

By keeping these considerations in mind, you'll be better prepared to effectively brainstorm startup ideas with ChatGPT and turn them into successful ventures!
