Use ChatGPT to create engaging surveys

Prompts for effective surveys that drive insights

Armed with survey results (Giphy)

Hey there, today we’re using ChatGPT to create surveys.

Yes, surveys are still super relevant! They help you understand your audience, gauge customer interests, and more - all to help you make better decisions and grow your startup.

In this issue, we highlight the types of surveys and then use ChatGPT to:

1️⃣ Set survey goals
2️⃣ Determine your survey audience
3️⃣ Decide the right survey length
4️⃣ Write survey questions
5️⃣ Take a quick survey (🌟)

Let’s begin.

Types of Surveys

Before writing your survey questions, decide what type of survey you are sending, what the goal of the survey is, and who the audience is.

For most businesses, the types of surveys that you would send are:

  1. Customer Satisfaction

  2. Market/Product Research

  3. Employee Engagement

  4. Event Feedback

  5. User Experience (UX) Research

Survey Goals

For example, let’s assume we want to do a market research survey but aren’t sure where to start. Use this prompt to help you brainstorm survey goals:

Prompt to brainstorm survey goals

I am planning to create a survey, but I am unsure about the specific goals I should aim for. The general area I am interested in is market research. Can you help me brainstorm and define potential goals for my survey?

In the prompt above, you can replace market research with any of the survey types I listed. Here’s the result of the prompt:

  1. Market segmentation

    1. Identify and profile target customer segments based on demographics, psychographics, or behaviors.

    2. Understand preferences and needs of different customer segments.

    3. Determine the size of each segment within your target market.

  2. Product development and improvement

    1. Assess customer needs and preferences for new products or features.

    2. Identify gaps in the market where your product or service could fill a need.

    3. Evaluate the appeal of different product concepts or designs.

    4. Understand the desired price range for your product or service.

    5. Collect feedback on existing products or services to inform improvements.

  3. Branding and positioning

    1. Evaluate the perception of your brand in the market.

    2. Assess the effectiveness of your brand's messaging and positioning.

    3. Identify the key factors that differentiate your brand from competitors.

    4. Understand customer expectations for your brand's products or services.

  4. Marketing and advertising

    1. Test the effectiveness and appeal of various marketing messages and campaigns.

    2. Evaluate the reach and impact of your current marketing channels.

    3. Discover which marketing channels are most effective in reaching your target audience.

    4. Understand the types of content and messaging that resonate with your audience.

  5. Customer satisfaction and loyalty

    1. Measure overall customer satisfaction and identify areas for improvement.

    2. Understand the factors that contribute to customer loyalty and repeat purchases.

    3. Identify potential issues or concerns that could lead to customer churn.

    4. Evaluate the effectiveness of your customer support and service.

Let’s use the results above and put them in the context of a real survey. I’ll create my survey to support the development of this newsletter, GPT Hacks. (I would love to get some product development and improvement feedback from you.)

By now, we know:

  • Our survey type: Market research

  • Our survey goal: Product development and improvements

Let’s continue.

Survey Audience

The last step before writing survey questions is determining who the audience of the survey will be. This will depend on the type of survey and how you are distributing it. Again, ChatGPT can help you brainstorm ideas here if you aren’t sure. Here are some prompts you can use:

  1. "Provide a detailed profile of the ideal target audience for [info about your business], including demographics, interests, and occupation."

  2. "List three possible segments within the [info about your business] target audience and describe their unique characteristics."

  3. "What are the common traits, preferences, or behaviors of individuals who would be interested in [info about your business] related topics?"

  4. "Considering the content and purpose of the [info about your business] which industries or job roles would be most interested in [buying this product/service or subscribing to xyz]?"

  5. "Identify potential user personas for the [info about your business] and provide a brief description of their background, needs, and motivations."

For GPT Hacks, the audience of the survey is YOU! The reader. We have lots of startup founders, startup employees, tech-savvy marketers, and small business owners that subscribe to our newsletter. We want to hear from all of you. 🙂

Survey Length

Now that we have our survey type, goal and audience. We can use ChatGPT to help us brainstorm question ideas. But first let’s decide on the number of questions we should use.

Depending on your audience, they may be willing to take longer surveys, but in general, a 2-3 minute survey will have a higher answer rate than one that takes 34 minutes to complete.

34-minute survey? No thanks.

As a general rule:

  • Closed-ended questions (i.e., multiple choice) take 10-15 seconds

  • Open-ended questions (i.e., how can we improve) take 30-45 seconds

  • So, a 2-minute survey would have around 5-8 questions max

You can experiment to see what works best for your audience. In my experience, I find that having mainly multiple-choice questions and only one open-ended question at the end works best.

Survey Questions

We finally have everything we need to craft the perfect survey questions. What works best in this step is asking ChatGPT for several ideas you can choose from. Here’s a prompt that works well:

ChatGPT Prompt for Survey Questions

I am planning to create a [survey type] with the goal of [specific goal(s)], targeting my audience of [describe your audience].

My product/service is [describe your product/service], and I am particularly interested in understanding [mention specific areas of interest or potential improvement].

Can you help me brainstorm [number of closed-ended questions] closed-ended and [number of open-ended questions] open-ended questions to include in the survey?

After doing this step, I got a series of questions to choose from that I could then put into a survey and send to my subscribers. There is some specific feedback I am looking to get from you, so I mixed between what ChatGPT gave me and added a few of my own questions.
