How to use AI to craft effective job descriptions 💼
A comprehensive guide to creating powerful job descriptions using AI.
Hiring a new employee (full-time or part-time) can be very time-consuming and stressful, especially when you are most likely also juggling all of your other responsibilities that are not going on pause while you focus on hiring.
This is why we are turning to AI to see how ChatGPT or Bard can help you with the hiring process.
In this first article on recruiting and hiring with the help of AI, we are going to focus on putting together the content of the job description.
Let’s get to it! 💼
A message from our sponsor AdCreative.AI

🤖 Job description prompt
The prompt you can use to have AI generate a job description for you, looks something like this:
Generate a job description for a [role] position at a [company type] called [company name]. The company is based in [company location] but also open to remote candidates. [company name] values [company values]. The tone of the job description should be [job description tone].
The role involves [highlights of the responsibilities].
Required qualifications include [highlights of the qualifications].
The benefits are [highlights of benefits].
This job ad will be posted on [job board names].
Let’s work through each section at a time and see an example.
📝 Gather the basics about your company
As a start, you need to include the basics:
Company name: either your actual company name or add a nickname instead. See the pro tip below.
Company location: where is your headquarters? Do you allow remote work or not?
Company type: is this a startup? A retail store? A hospital? A family-owned business?
✨ Pro tip: if you are concerned about privacy, you can include a nickname for your company that you can then replace with your actual company name when done. But try to make the nickname relevant to your industry as ChatGPT will derive more details for the job description from the name.
💌 Company values and benefits
You don’t have to list your entire value statement (or list) in the prompt you give the AI. But including a few important ones help shape the job description and gives the AI more context to create a useful job description for you.
For example, you can include:
Innovation: do you encourage your employees to think outside of the box and come up with new ways of doing things?
Creativity: do you let your employees express themselves with their own email signature?
Continuous learning: do you offer a kick-ass policy on taking time for training and getting reimbursed?
Commitment to work-life balance: one free mental health day a month? If Tuesday is a holiday then Monday is off? Who works between Christmas and New Year’s anyways?
Team-oriented culture: sink or swim together?
Social responsibility: do you focus on sustainability, community engagement, ethical conduct, and integrity?
Customer-centricity: are you the next Zappos in the making?
Health and wellness programs: gym memberships, mental health resources, or wellness challenges.
Flexible work arrangements: are you still good with remote work or a hybrid schedule? Are hours flexible? Do you offer unlimited vacation days?
Company events: regular social events, daily lunches, team-building activities, or company retreats.
💼 Job role, responsibilities, and qualifications
Now let’s get into the job itself. Include short blurbs on the following:
The role: what is the job, in simple, clear language.
Outline key tasks the individual will undertake.
List out any must-have qualifications.
✨ Pro Tip: use external facing job titles in your headline and keep your internal titles for the details or you career page. It’s really fun to call your customer service people ninjas, but a job posting that says you are hiring ninjas will get lost when prospects are searching for new opportunities.
🎵 The tone of the job description
The tone of the job description should match your company culture. You just need to include one of these:
Formal
Casual
Enthusiastic
Authoritative
Friendly
Inspirational
🌐 Which job boards are you posting in?
Let the AI know the primary job boards you are planning to use. This will give the AI more context on the tone and style to use.
A LinkedIn ad will look very different than an ad on Angel List or one on Mandy or Nurse.com.
